What’s next? Debtors Prison?

In a sickeningly gleeful attack on everyone in the country the Republican Senate began the grisly dismantling of the Affordable Care Act on Wednesday January 11th. It happened quietly, while most of America slept in their beds, visions of tax cuts dancing in their heads. They snuck it into the budget, rather than attempt to write and pass a new bill overturning the ACA.

Why did they sneak it into the budget? Because a bill faces Democratic filibuster, requiring 60 votes to overcome. The Republican Senate only has 52 seats. So instead of trying to work with the other senators that represent the rest of this country they instead cut federal spending for the program with only 51 votes, using a “reconciliation directive” within the budget.

In other words, the slimy cowards snuck the change into the budget instead of arguing new legislation in front of all of America.

Democrats offered a number of amendments to the resolution to attempt to save parts of the ACA  but each one was voted down by Republicans.

Thanks to the Republican party insurance companies no longer have to cover “pre-existing conditions.” Sorry cancer patients, those with diabetes, each and every spoonie out there and anyone who ever gets seriously sick ever. You cannot get private coverage anymore. Thankfully Republicans voted to increase taxes to cover the additional cost of emergency room visits caused by millions of uninsured Americans — OH WAIT. THEY DIDN’T.

Republicans voted to terminate federal aid to rural hospitals, insuring all the Americans in rural parts of this nation will be unable to access emergency services and therefore inadvertently putting a term limit on their own careers. Without emergency care in rural areas the Republican voting base will die off faster now, but that’s ok, they voted for these people so clearly this is what they wanted to happen.  It would seem the Senate is just as short-sighted as the people they claim to represent.

Republicans killed the Children’s Health Insurance Program, a program which provided children with health care so that they didn’t grow up to be chronically ill adults without any insurance thanks to the pre-existing conditions rule. By doing this the Senate has assured a consistent increase in the number of Americans who can only receive care at free clinics and emergency rooms, further straining our State and Municipal governments.

Republicans voted against the rule saying you can keep your kids on your private insurance until they’re 26. Happily they voted to raise taxes and increase federal funding for colleges so America’s young adults can get insurance through school. OH WAIT, yeah, I know – old joke. They didn’t.

Republicans reduced funding for Medicare and Medicaid as well. It doesn’t matter how hard you have worked in this country, when you are retired and old you should know that you better have saved enough in retirement to pay for your medical care, cause we ain’t gonna.

The Republicans have yet to offer a replacement for the ACA despite claims that they intend to do so. Interestingly President Trump, once again not understanding how our government works, has promised that he has a replacement that will be in place “probably the same day, could be the same hour” as the repeal. As the Republican Senate cannot just slip a new Healthcare Act into the budget they will have to get the 60 votes necessary to pass any plan Trump will offer. Democrats have been clear that they will fight against both the repeal, and the replacement, as neither is in the best interest of the electorate.

So welcome to the new America. If you are wealthy, you’re likely going to be just fine. For the rest of you who felt that somehow you were improving your life by restricting intelligent and inexpensive preventive health care for millions of Americans you haven’t. What you have done is make sure that all of these people are going to cost our hospitals millions of unrecoverable dollars.

Welcome to America, land of the sick.

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new symptom!!

You know, it’s hard enough to build a life around chronic migraines and fibromyalgia but when my body decides it’s just a bit bored with life as usual and pops up another uncomfortable symptom I kind of feel as though I am under attack.

WTF body? Chronic daily migraines weren’t interesting enough for you? Parathesia and neuropathy getting a bit blasé? I was just getting used to them thank you very much!

So now I can’t really eat. If I eat more than a few bites of solid food I am throwing up within the hour. I keep telling myself this isn’t the case but having recycled every decent meal I’ve had all week I am no longer fighting it. It’s protein shakes and toast for me.

I wish I knew what was going on but that is a tired old tune. I suppose it’s safe to say my body is broken in increasingly interesting ways. Until we figure this one out I guess I’ll have no trouble meeting my weight loss goals.

Making all the things… Part Two.

Back again after an interlude of extreme involvement in the art of forging metal into pretty shiny things. I am not sure why I am utterly entranced by this process but it makes me feel as though I have come home. Perhaps it’s the fact that all the problems that arise are so easily fixed with a reapplication of heat or a polish here and there. Whatever the reason, I am basking in the sheer joy of turning sheet metal and wire into pendants and bracelets.

Of course, not every will want pendants or bracelets for the holidays so I am back with another handmade gift suggestion list. Last time we focused on college age people, so let’s look at tweens and teens this time around.

Easy Sharpie Tie Dye

I love the look of tie dye but I have always been intimidated by the actual process of it. After some savvy internet research I discovered a simple way to create tie dye decor.

For gift giving the possibilities are vast. You could purchase small canvas bags and create personalized tie dyed lunch bags for your kids. Go bigger and you’ve got overnight bags, beach bags, sport totes, etc.

You can certainly make gorgeous shirts for not a whole lot of money with this technique. Hanes has a crazy sale going on and their shirts are soft, durable, and come in light colors that would be easy to tie dye over. You could even check out their sweat pants sale and tie dye up some super comfy lounge wear for the cold holiday season.

Finally, make some small zippered coin purses/dice bags/make-up bags with tie dye decor for a cool stocking stuffer.

DIY Bleach Design

On the opposite end of the DIY shirt spectrum we have bleach. A good friend of mine taught me this technique and it’s fairly simple. You choose a stencil, leaf, shape, etc, that you like. Lay a dark shirt flat on cardboard and place the stencil on it where you want the negative of the shape to be on the shirt. Spray with a bleach spray and toss in the laundry to rinse. You may want to scrunch the fabric around the shape or stencil to get a more even look.

If you want to take this idea to the next level and add additional materials, like fabric paint, the folks over at By Hand London have posted a DIY Galaxy Shirt idea.

Once again, Hanes is a great resource for well made and comfortable shirts, this time in a variety of dark colors, to assist you in making your teen or tween (or anyone really) a well made hand decorated shirt worth wearing.

Before you dive in I suggest a visit to diyready.com for their basic duct tape fabric tutorial video. A few ideas for gifting with Duct Tape:

Does your tween or teen have a younger sibling? They can make these charming Duct Tape and sponge boats for the bathtub and gift them with something they made themselves, in addition to a great deal of bath-time fun.

I could do several months worth of blog posts on the power of duct tape. I strongly suggest you check out the Duct Brand websites craft section or just google “duct tape diy” and your browser will be filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of ideas ranging from fashion accessories to waterproof beach totes to wedding dresses.
